Do you need a technical cofounder to launch your startup?

I often get asked by non-technical female founders about how to find a technical cofounder when they’re starting out. It’s often their number one challenge.

The first thing is to stop looking! In some way, putting off building your idea because you haven’t found someone to build it for you is just a procrastination mechanism.

Why should anyone work on someone else’s unvalidated idea for free? There are so many ways to build, test, and grow an idea without knowing how to code now. If you want to build a marketplace, check out Sharetribe Ltd. If you want to build a delivery app, check out Glide. If you want to build a subscription platform, check out Webflow and Memberstack Inc.

If you can get something live, start building, and even get to revenue – you’re in a much better position to start to find people to work with you. If your product starts to get traction and become known in a market, you’ll even start to get potential hires knocking at your door to join your company. And yes, even for free for equity because they believe in it and see its potential.

Remember, you don’t need anyone else’s permission to launch. You don’t need an investor to get it, a technical cofounder to build it, or even your family to understand. You can just do it. 💯

The other thing to know is that the life of a founder always involves figuring stuff out and problem solving. It doesn’t matter if you’re a company of one or 1000 – as the CEO, you’ll be still be responsible for rolling up your sleeves. That’s why learning how to be self sufficient, resourceful, and hungry for self development is an important skill to develop when starting out.
